a girl is alone at the fair. the air is thick like smokehouse chicken and greasy like fried dough.

there is hay everywhere there used to be mud.

it is fall, and the air is cold like fall.

she drove to the fair with her boyfriend. she is not sure where he is right now. she is not sure if he is still her boyfriend.

they met last year at this fair.

he is supposed to be in the wood-chopping competition again.

when she was little, the first year her parents took her to this fair:

a wood-chopping contest did not sound exciting, but then she learned there would be ax-throwing.

that sounded exciting.

ax-throwing turned out to be the least exciting competition. all the others were very exciting.

she had wanted to meet him after seeing him in the competition.

she went and stood near the bleachers and watched the competition.

she guessed she had said something she shouldn't have in the car this morning.

he had seemed very eager to be mad at her.

he won very easily.

that is his anger at me that did that.

people in the crowd yelled and screamed and whistled.

two girls ran up to talk to him.

they took turns touching him on the arm and smiling.

she had to find a ride home and didn't know if she knew anyone there.
